MCI or Medical Council of India has cancelled the admission of 95 postgraduate students at seven private medical colleges across Pondicherry. All these students were enrolled for the academic session 2017-18. MCI confirmed that the colleges violated rules to enroll students in the medical programmes. These colleges admitted students who did not take part in Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) which is an official panel constituted by the state government of Puducherry for conducting admissions to professional courses. Following this, on July 28, 2017, MCI issued a notice to all the seven private colleges to cancel the admission of 95 students enrolled in PG courses.

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Kiran Bedi revealed that few students who were given provisional allotment by Centralised Admission Committee were refused admission in the colleges. Enraged by the policy of college managements, these students met the Lieutenant Governor and submitted written complaints. The students claimed that they had paid the fee prescribed by CENTAC. However, private medical colleges denied admission to them.

According to sources, these deemed universities denied admission to students who were provisionally allotted a seat by CENTAC and further demanded an exorbitant fee of Rs. 40 lakh to Rs. 50 lakh per annum. MCI directed all the seven private medical colleges to furnish the list of students admitted for the academic session 2017-18.

After a careful scrutiny of the list, MCI pointed that the colleges had granted admission to those whose name was not listed in the merit list of CENTAC. The council has also directed the colleges to submit a compliance report within two weeks.

Kiran Bedi assured that the state government will take steps to allocate the vacant seats left after the cancellation of admissions. These seats will be allotted to the meritorious students.
