Pondicherry: MCI Rejects CM’s Plea of Postponing MBBS Counselling Dates
- Medical Council of India has declined Chief Minister’s plea for postponing the counselling dates for the admission to MBBS/ BDS courses under management quota.
- MCI further directed the Puducherry government must strictly follow the schedule prescribed.
Lt Governor of Pondicherry, Kiran Bedi clarified that the Medical Council of India has declined Chief Minister’s plea for postponing the counselling dates for the admission to MBBS/ BDS courses under management quota. There are three private medical colleges across the state. MCI further directed the Puducherry government must strictly follow the schedule prescribed. Lt Governor further mentioned that the state government must work constructively instead of writing letters to MCI. She questioned the Puducherry government for adopting legislations like Tamil Nadu state assembly.

The Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) of Puducherry has completed the admission process for MBBS/ BDS courses under government quota on July 22 and July 23, 2017. The admission process under management quota began on July 24, 2017. Parent associations across the state have requested the state government to extend the counselling dates under management quota. However, MCI declined to extend the dates further.
Earlier, the state government of Puducherry also requested the centre to exempt it from NEET. However, the centre had directed to conduct the admissions based on NEET merit.

There is no clarity on the admission process for medical courses in Tamil Nadu. The state government has been struggling to get assent for the legislations adopted by the state assembly. Chief Minister of the state, as well as other ministers, met Prime Minister Modi seeking an exemption. However, the central government has not given any clarity on the NEET issue and the aspirants in Tamil Nadu are nervous about the existing situation.
