Popular Astrophysicist Chandrasekhar’s Work to be celebrated by UK-based University

Nobel Prize-winning Astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was part of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities whose achievements and work will be celebrated at the University of Leicester throughout October, which is also termed as the Black History month in Britain.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leicester will pay homage to the works of one black and minority ethnic scientist on each of the days of October. The university will also present a summary of the life and work of these scientists on their respective days. The university is a point of attraction for various Indian students.

In a statement, the university said that mathematician Benjamin Banneker, astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, astronaut Mae Jemison, aerospace engineer Mary Jackson and cosmologist Hiranya Peiris will be among the featured men and women, whose work and achievements will be displayed on a screen in the foyer.

The university aims to raise awareness about these legends who have –represented and belong to the black and minority ethnic people in the industry. It is a representation for the students that will tell them about the physicists who have altered the way the universe is viewed. With this representation, the university also aims to motivate more BME students to study further.

The Black History Month is one of the popular science festivals that is recognized and observed in America and Canada apart from the UK. The festival is also celebrated annually in the United States. It was initially conducted in the US in the year 1976, and Canada in 1995 in February.
