Prakash Javadekar to Lay Foundation Stone for IIT Palakkad in August
- Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Pinaraji Vijayan confirmed the news after meeting Prakash Javadekar on July 26, 2017.
- Javadekar assured that the ministry would take steps to establish a Department of Architecture at IIT Palakkad.
HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar will lay the foundation stone for Indian Institute of Technology, Palakkad in August 2017. Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Pinaraji Vijayan confirmed the news after meeting Prakash Javadekar on July 26, 2017. On this occasion, CM of Kerala also urged the centre to set up School of Planning and Architecture in Kerala. However, Javadekar assured that the ministry would take steps to establish a Department of Architecture at IIT Palakkad. Currently, IIT Palakkad is functioning from a temporary campus.

Prakash Javadekar also assured that the centre would construct two new hostel buildings at the Central University of Kerala, one of which will be funded by the UGC while the other will get funds from the social welfare grant. Javadekar further pointed that the varsity could not accommodate all the students on the campus. Therefore, students must make use of private hostels. Javadekar assured adequate funds for the development of the university in the next budget.
The construction of transit campus of IIT Palakkad was expected to begin in January 2017. However, due to the delay in the acquisition of land, the construction had been delayed.

Former HRD Minister, Smriti Irani inaugurated the temporary campus of Indian Institute of Technology, Palakkad on August 3, 2015. For the past two years, the institute has been functioning from the temporary campus that does not have adequate and advanced facilities. It could accommodate only 120 students per batch.
Javadekar also assured that the construction of the permanent campus will be completed as early as possible.
