PSUs to Recruit Students from IITs after Two Years

The placement season at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is set to begin in two weeks. At this juncture, IITs are witnessing a rush of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and companies from the core sectors of engineering.
For instance, around 300 companies have been registered for placements at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay which include six PSUs. On the other hand, a total number of 263 companies registered at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras out of which four were PSUs.

Himanshu Basal, Placement Manager at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee revealed that a total number of five PSUs have been registered so far which include ONGC. He mentioned that more PSUs are expected to register soon.
In the year 2014, Madras High Court had banned PSUs from recruiting students from IITs as it was unfair to students from other institutes who also wanted to secure jobs in PSUs. However, the court dismissed the plea in September 2015 and stated that PSUs could recruit students from IITs.

This year, the number of startups participating in the recruitments at IITs have dropped, and core companies seem to be flocking to the premier institutes for placements.
Tom Mathew, Professor In-charge of Placements at IIT-B indicated that a few core companies like Faurecia, Toyo Engineering, Vedanta Group and some new FMCG recruiters are expected to take part in this placement season.
Manu Santhanam, Placement Advisor at IIT-M, said that core sector giants such as Bajaj, Hyundai and General Electric have also registered for placements this year.
