Puducherry CM Demands Inclusion of Education in State List
- All matters relating to education currently fall under the Concurrent List in which both the Centre and the States have a say.
- The Pondicherry CM has demanded a change in the process so that states can take independent decisions.
Vexed with the disturbances and unrest caused due to the implementation of NEET for the admission to MBBS and BDS courses in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, Chief Minister of Pondicherry, Mr. Narayanasamy demanded the inclusion of ‘Education’ in the State List. According to him, the centre should not impose its policies on states in matters relating to education. States must be given complete freedom to decide on various decisions relating to education, he added.

According to Indian Constitution, there are three lists which include: -
- Union List (Central List)
- State List
- Concurrent List
Only the central government is empowered to take decisions on the subjects that fall under Union List. Similarly, the state government has the authority to take decisions on the subjects that fall under State List. Both central and state governments can take decisions on the subjects that fall under Concurrent List. Presently, ‘Education’ is one of the subjects of ‘Concurrent List’.
Since the education system in different states varies from each other, CM of Pondicherry urged the centre to include ‘Education’ as one of the subjects in the state list.

The mandatory NEET rule imposed by the central government for MBBS and BDS courses in Tamil Nadu has led to nothing but a big chaos. Students have been protesting against NEET demanding the central government to scrap NEET from the next year. Anitha, a medical aspirant from Tamil Nadu committed suicide due to the mandatory NEET rule. She failed to secure admission in MBBS courses even though she scored 100% marks in a few subjects of Class 12. Since NEET is highly based on CBSE syllabus, she was unable to perform well in NEET whereas what she learnt was from the state syllabus that Tamil Nadu follows. On September 9, 2017, AIADMK has called for a statewide protest against NEET and has, therefore, urged all the students, volunteers and parents to take part in it.
