Puducherry MBBS Colleges to Reserve 50% Seats for Govt-Sponsored Students
In the upcoming budget session for Puducherry, Union Minister, Malladi Krishna Rao, declared that a Bill will be passed allowing for 50% of the medical seats to be reserved for Govt-sponsored students, in all medical colleges of the state.
Union Minister, Malladi Krishna Rao of Puducherry Health and Tourism announced that 50% of the seats in Puducherry Medical Colleges will set aside for students under government sponsorship. He added that to promote the step, the Union Territory will soon pass a Bill for the same.
Further speaking on the step, he added that he Private Medical Colleges of Puducherry had earmarked seats under government quota only after certain negotiations had been made between them and the government.
To avert a situation where medical colleges “play hide-and-seek game” a Bill which will direct all medical colleges to keep aside 50% of their MBBS seats for Government-sponsored students. The Bill is expected to be passed during the upcoming Budget Session, which is expected to be held in the last week of March or early in April 2020. As per sources, the Bill has already been prepared and is awaiting approval from the cabinet.

In 2019, many states, especially in the southern regions of India, received approval to introduce MBBS seats. Among the states, Tamil Nadu recently had been approved to introduce 150 MBBS seats in two Government Medical Colleges. With the approval of these seats, the state is set to see more than 600 new MBBS seats available from the next session.

In the neighbouring state of Telangana, the State Government focused on introducing seats to accommodate PG medical aspirants. In a recent notification, the Medical Council of India approved over 130 PG medical seats in Telangana PG Medical Colleges. A total of 6 Medical Colleges across the state have been granted approval to add more PG medical seats, with Nizam Medical College receiving approval for the highest number of PG Medical Seats, i.e. 54 PG medical Seats.
