The state higher education department has finally become active after realizing that almost 33,000 HSC pass students might have to lose a year. The department has asked universities in the state to give admissions to such students and secure their future.

The director of state higher education department, Dhanraj Mane said that letters have been sent to various non-agricultural universities asking them to round up the admission process ensuring that the students who have cleared HSC exams recently, get admission by September 10.

The future of thousands of students, including 6,770 in Pune is at stake as the universities and the higher education department didn’t pay heed to their problems.

Unlike the previous years, the HSC supplementary exams 2016 were held in July. As per the rules, students who clear the exam are entitled to appear for admission process for various undergraduate courses without dropping a year.

Followed by the media and student pressure the department has decided to conduct re-exams and made it clear that the students won’t lose a year. Instructions regarding admissions have not been issued yet.

Mane also informed that the admission schedule is different for every college and that there is no centralized system for admissions. Colleges conduct their own individual admission drives, he added.

However, admissions to professional courses such as law or architecture are done basis the scores of Common Entrance Tests. He also said that considering this situation, these students will only be able to take admission in art courses. This is the reason that the admissions have been extended till September 10.

This will shift the academic calendar and varsities will have to accommodate the students accordingly. The class, exams, and results will also be delayed according to this schedule.

As soon as the issue caught the attention of colleges, most of the principals and directors demanded that the capacity of colleges be increased by 10% so that these students can be properly accommodated.

Mane also added that a 10% increase in intake has already been approved by the authorities. He also said that regardless of the number of seats available, students can still apply for admissions. The universities have asked for autonomy regarding the number of seats as they have to ensure that no student suffers due to lack of seats. He ensured that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure that the students get justice.
