Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has taken another step to strengthen its green energy mission by providing incentives to colleges for installing solar panels. To make implementation agile, the university administration has laid down a rule that colleges will have to install solar panel installation in addition to the rest of the list of approved expenses that fall under the university’s Quality Improvement Programme (QIP).

Wasudeo Gade, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that Rs.5 lakh is given by the university to affiliated colleges under the QIP. This grant is used for the development of the university that includes building expenses, maintaining the sports equipment supply, laboratory, computers and library.

He further added that from 2016 and onwards, colleges will only be given the grant if they have the solar panel development program in their proposals. Colleges that are planning to develop solar panels can send their proposals under the QIP funding as it will help in motivating the colleges to adapt to green energy initiatives, added Gade.

The university has also specified the types of systems that can be installed as each system has its own advantage.

Following are the type of systems that can be installed:

  • Grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system
  • Off-grid system
  • Hybrid system
