The Education Department of Rajasthan has got a tremendous boost as around 50,000 B.Ed students have started their internships at government schools. Among the major cities, Alwar has got a total number of 8,000 interns followed by Jaipur with 5,000 interns. Identified as one of the states in India with a poor performance in the education sector, this comes as a major achievement for the state.

This is the first time in the country that such a high number of B.Ed students started internship in government schools. Minister of Human Resource and Development Prakash Javadekar mentioned that the initiative would be adopted by other states too. Under this initiative, the B.Ed students will teach in government schools for four months, and they will be marked according to their performance and then be recruited to permanent teaching positions in government schools. The initiative was introduced since the B.Ed course has been revised into a two-year course as against the previous one year course.

Objective of Teaching Internships of B. Ed Students:

  • To improve the quality of education imparted by teachers

  • Give an opportunity to teachers to utilize their theoretical knowledge into practice

  • Save government funds

Sunita Bhatt, one of the interns at a government school in Ajmer shared that it is a unique experience to teach students in government schools. However, the resources are limited in the schools, but the students are enthusiastic and have a strong determination of learning. The internship will help B.Ed students to meet challenges in school life ahead. So far, the initiative taken by the government has been successful, and most of the students are allowed to take an internship in their native place. These interns will teach primary classes.

Most of the teachers and officials of government have hailed the initiative taken the Rajasthan government. The internship scheme would help the government in saving crores of rupees. This initiative would help the government to maintain the student-teacher ratio as well. The academic reports 2015-2016 of Rajasthan reveal that there are approximately 2.59 lakh teachers to cater to 60 lakh students. There are approximately 72,229 government schools in the state, which effectively means that there is a deficiency of about 60,000 teachers to fulfill the requirement. While in Rajasthan there is a dearth of quality teachers, it is really unfortunate that in India, about 80,000 ghost teachers have been identified in higher learning institutes, according to Education Minister, Prakash Javadekar. And in the event of all this, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development has revealed its plans to introduce a national-level exam for recruiting school teachers.
