Regional and Tribal Language Courses Most Popular at Ranchi University
As the archaeological and professional translator sector blooms, many non-tribal students are opting for Tribal and Regional Language courses. The university plans more developed infrastructure and facilities for these courses.
The University of Ranchi is out of the few universities in India which offer uniques courses on tribal studies. Tribal and Regional language has been gaining popularity in the region to for the increased demand for skilled language professionals in Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and jobs of translators. The university this year has seen a notable increase in the applications of full-time Tribal language and regional language courses offered under the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in the university.
Nagpuri, Mundari, Ho, Kurukh, Santhali, Kurmali, Khortha and Panchpargania are the 9 tribal language the university offers UG courses in. Any Class XII pass student with at least one language subject studied is eligible for the course.
The pro-vice-chancellor of Ranchi University, Ms Kamini Kumari has said that these subjects are seeing massive growth in the number of application received. The courses are pursued by non-tribal students as well along with the Tribal students. She also informed that the university has morning and evening shifts to accommodate students in the courses and improve the gross-enrollment ratio.
Archaeological Centres which are mostly under the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) recruit these students with the knowledge of Tribal Language in the organisation. Their demands are high for translator jobs also.
Ms Kumari expressed that the university has plans to introduce a department of ‘Regional and Tribal Language.’ the tribal and regional language courses are now conducted under the Humanities and Social science department of the Faculty of Arts in the Varsity.
Other than these courses, the university has reported the other most popular courses are Commerce, Bio-Technology, BCA, MCA, BBA, English and Hindi. Ms. Kumari said that the university, in order to make its courses more profession oriented, will include the courses of Hotel Management, Fashion Designing, TV and Film Studies along with certificate courses in foreign languages such as French, German and Japanese from the 2019 session.
The foreign language courses in Ranchi University will initially run with guest faculties but the university has plans to introduce permanent faculties soon.
Among the other language courses offered by the university, Bengali, Sanskrit and Urdu receive the highest number of applicants each year. The university is planning to have its own admission system as the faulty centralised admission system in Jharkhand state caused many problems as per the university admission officials.
