Rejection of Delhi University's Ad-Hoc Teacher’s Nomination Evokes Reactions

In a jolt to the ad-hoc teachers' community, the Delhi University's Scrutiny Committee has rejected the nomination of ad-hoc teachers for the post of members of the Executive Council. It rejected the nomination on the grounds that an ad-hoc teacher cannot contest an election to the Council.

The rejection has added fuel to the already embittered relations of the Delhi University Authority and the ad-hoc teachers' fraternity. Already the Delhi University ad-hoc teachers are on the streets of the capital seeking fulfilment of various demands.

Though the Scrutiny Committee did not give adequate reasons for rejecting the nomination of Sachidanand Jha for the proposed post of the member of the Executive Council (EC), but the rejection has created a flurry of reactions from different quarters, especially from the ad-hoc teachers.

EC member, Abha Dev Habib said that the committee did not give any valid reasons for the rejection of the nomination of the Jha. But ad-hoc teachers always vote in the elections of the University and their names are there in the electoral rolls. This is for the first time that ad-hoc teacher who wanted to fight the election and the committee did not permit him to contest the election.

Jha has been working as an ad-hoc teacher for the last eight years at Rajdhani College. He said that he is the victim of malice of the University Authority as he had recently written an article in a newspaper on the plight of the ad-hoc teachers and this may have prompted the authority to take the decision, as the committee could not produce any valid reference in favour of their action.

The DU Teacher's Association (DUTA) has strongly condemned the action of the University Authority. The election is scheduled to be held on February 9, 2017.
