Despite of the fact that there is a center of NIFT in Hyderabad, not many students from the Telugu regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana are showing much interest in the courses offered by it. The institute offers a variety of undergraduate and post-graduate courses in fashion technology to the students and the admission is based on merit and performance of the students in the All India entrance examinations. The lack of interest by the Telugu students in the courses has led to an increase in the number of students from the North and north East states enrolling in them. These students are keen on pursuing a career in fashion.
In total there are about 35 seats, including 5 NRI quota, allocated for each course. The demand for these courses is very high among the students from North India and at times the demand ratio is 15 students competing for one seat. However only 3 to 4 Telugu students are enrolled in each course said G. Hari Shankar Prasad, who is the chairperson of Department of Fashion Management Studies, NIFT, here on Tuesday.
Even the number of applications filed by the Telugu students are not anything positive. The reasons for this statistics are many. One of these is the lack of awareness among the parents and the students about the career opportunities in the fashion world. Also there could be some misconceptions regarding these courses and ramp walks. The bachelor courses are spread out over eight semesters and the masters over four semesters. The course fee of each semester is Rs 70,000 depending upon the course undertaken.
In order to overcome this anomaly the institute is conducting free admission awareness meetings with the prospective parents and students in different colleges across the state. The written examination for admission to all the bachelor and masters courses would be held on 14th February and the last date for online registration is 10th January. The results of the exam would be declared in the months of May and June and the counselling would be done in June.
