Revoking 1975 Order, Only Solution for IIM Faculty Quota?
IIMs opt for recalling 1975 order as a solution for IIM faculty quota.
After a lot of controversy on the hiring of faculty under the reservation quota, it has been figured out by many IIMs that the issue can only be resolved once the order by HRD Ministry in the year 1975 is withdrawn. According to the order, the institutes were exempted from having any quotas.
According to one IIM director, the government should have removed the 1975 order long ago. IIMs are still bound by the order passed by the HRD Ministry which exempts the institutes for reserving seats under SCs/STs/OBCs quotas.

He also pointed out that the order was initially issued for a technical institute in the year 1974 and not for a management institute. It is the job of the HRD Ministry to figure out how the order which was meant to be followed by the technical institutes got extended to IIMs. Lastly, he said that in the year 1975, IIM Ahmedabad was given an exemption and soon other IIMs adopted it.

The director said that finding a solution to this would not be easy. In case the order was issued after a Cabinet decision, then HRD will have to seek Cabinet approval which will be a lengthy process.
The HRD Ministry has not yet commented on the matter. An official said that the ministry will soon be declaring their strategy.
