Sad to Leave IIM-A before Term End: Director Ashish Nanda
- Having spent four years at IIM-A, Mr. Ashish Nanda stepped down on 1st Sept. 2017. He resigned from the post a year early from his designated tenure.
- There were speculations that he had differences with MHRD on issues relating to the autonomy of the institute.
Director of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Mr. Ashish Nanda resigned from the post before the completion of his term citing personal reasons. On September 2, 2017, Director of Prof. Errol D’souza will assume charge as interim director of IIM Ahmedabad. Demitting the office on September 1, 2017, outgoing director, Mr. Ashish Nanda shared his experiences at the institute.
He is of the opinion that one quits only when he/she feels sad and unhappy. Giving the example of Gujarat food that has both salt and sugar in right proportions, he said that he too felt the sense of fulfillment and achievement along with sadness and nostalgia. He was even suggested by the former directors of IIM Ahmedabad that it was the right time for him to leave.

On the other hand, he also added that if one wants to take the position only to deliver convocation speech or cut ribbons at inaugurations then it will not be the case. Real work towards the enhancement of the institute should be the real agenda.
Mr. Ashish Nanda further clarified that he did not have any differences with the Board of Governors and government. The BoG and government supported him in all aspects by giving valuable suggestions which further entrusts hope in the team and alumni. IIM Ahmedabad will witness greater achievements in future, he assured.
There were speculations that Mr. Ashish Nanda and MHRD had differences in an issue relating to the autonomy of the institute. It might be one of the possible reasons for him to step down as a director even before the expiry of his term.
In his tenure, Mr. Nanda managed to maintain a strong connection with alumni. The revenue of IIM Ahmedabad has also grown by 70% through executive education.
Explaining about the various challenges being faced by IIM Ahmedabad, Mr. Ashish Nanda pointed that research is one of the areas of major concern where it can improve. He further suggested that the institute is capable of attracting a large number of international students by offering joint programmes. There is a need to nurture an environment where the best of faculty members can be a part of the institute. After assuming the charge as the Director of IIM Ahmedabad four years ago, Mr. Ashish Nanda took steps for increasing faculty strength from 84 to 96.

The diversity of student intake at IIM Ahmedabad is a determinant factor of greater diversity which is a result of special quotas and subsequent interview processes. Students are encouraged to take part in discussion-based learning which is regarded as an effective way. Perspectives and experiences are shared and overall learning is enriched.
Officials associated with BoG and the faculty of IIM Ahmedabad bid a grand farewell to Mr. Ashish Nanda.
