Considering the poor pass percentage in the five-year LLB and three-year LLB courses, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is likely to lower the cut-off or passing percentage for these courses. Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, Dr. NR Kamalakar convened a meeting recently to discuss problems faced by the law faculty. Principals and representatives of law colleges affiliated to SPPU, officials of exam department and dean of the faculty of humanities attended the meeting.

The major issue taken up during the meeting was poor pass percentage in three-year and five-year LLB course. Every year, only 8-10 percent of first-year students and 18-20 percent of second-year students are able to pass the examinations. The meeting focused on figuring out ways for improving the pass percentage, however, while the discussion, it was suggested that SPPU could reduce the cut-off percentage for passing law courses. Alternatively, other law colleges and universities follow a higher benchmark for law qualifications.

During the meeting, the officials, principals and representatives suggested the varsity to introduce a uniform 40% for passing in the law courses. A proposal on the same will be sent to the VC office soon after whose approval, it will be tabled before the Academic Council. The officials of law faculty urged the varsity for a faster approval of the proposal.
