Last week, the Supreme Court of India has agreed to the suggestions that called for the vacant seats in Post Graduate medical courses in private unaided medical colleges be filled as per NEET-PG AIQ order of merit.

A bench of Justices Indu Malhotra and AM Khanwilkar was hearing the matter in Uttar Pradesh in this regard on May 25, 2018. During the court proceedings, Medical Council of India (MCI) revealed that close to 41.95% of postgraduate medical seats in private medical colleges across Uttar Pradesh have remained vacant.

Additional Solicitor General, Mr. Pinky Anand, who was representing the centre during the proceedings suggested for a similar directive in other states. However, it is up to the states to decide whether to conduct admission for vacant PG medical seats as per NEET-PG AIQ or state quota. The last date for completing the admission process for PG medical courses is May 31, 2018.

Finally, the bench agreed to the suggestion made by Mr. Pinky Anand and disposed of the petition filed by UP Unaided Medical Colleges Welfare Association.

The court noted that the suggestion made by Additional Solicitor General was appropriate. Now, more aspirants who are unable to secure admission initially can get admission to PG medical courses. As per the norms, the candidates who already sought admission as per previous merit list are not allowed to change the college.

MCI will soon make the apex court’s order available on the official websites of Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
