SC Allows 8 Government Medical Colleges to Enroll 800 Students for MBBS
- Supreme Court of India permitted eight government colleges in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh to admit students in MBBS and BDS courses.
- These colleges offer 800 seats in medical and dental courses.
On June 18, 2018, the Supreme Court of India issued an order allowing eight government medical colleges in three states to admit students in MBBS and BDS courses for the academic session 2018-19. Earlier, the central government had barred these colleges from admitting students for the current academic session due to deficiencies.
The apex court ordered Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary In-Charge of medical education of Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to rectify the deficiencies pointed by Medical Council of India in eight government medical colleges.

Medical Colleges Granted Approval for MBBS and BDS Admissions:
The following are the eight medical colleges that were granted approval to admit students:
- Rajkiya Medical College – Jalaun District, Uttar Pradesh
- Government Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital – Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh
- Government Medical College – Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh
- Government Allopathic Medical college – Banda, Uttar Pradesh
- Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand
- Nalanda and Government Medical College – Bettiah, Bihar
- Vardhaman Institute of Medical Sciences – Pawapuri, Bihar
- Anurag Narayan Magadh Medical College – Gaya, Bihar
A vacation bench of justices Indu Malhotra and Abdul Nazeer informed MCI to carry out an inspection in these medical colleges after three months to figure out whether the deficiencies are sorted out or not. If the colleges fail to sort out the deficiencies, principal secretaries of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand will be held personally responsible for the non-compliance of apex court’s orders.

The court further stated that the reason for granting permission to these colleges is to ensure that 800 MBBS and BDS seats are not wasted. These 800 seats will be added to the seat matrix of government colleges and the admission counselling for these colleges will take place on June 19, 2018. The further hearing of the petition will take place on September 25, 2018.
