Thousands of students from Jammu & Kashmir took a deep breath of relief when the Supreme Court of India extended the deadline for admissions to PMSSS (Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme) by a month. Due to the current situations prevailing in the state, the admissions that were supposed to end on 15th August 2019 have now been extended till 15th September 2019.

4500 J&K Students Avail PM's Scholarship Scheme

4,500 students from J&K have reported at colleges across the country to pursue undergraduate studies under the PM's Scholarship Scheme. The number has been the highest in the last six years. Out of the total students, 2,400 are from the Jammu region, 1,474 are from Kashmir and the rest of the students are from Ladakh.Last year, approximately 2,500 students had taken admission under PMSSS and nearly 3,000 in the year before.

The PMSSS was launched in 2010-11 by the central government to encourage J&K students to get admission to various Engineering Colleges in India and regular courses. As per the scheme, the meritorious students receive scholarships to meet their expenditure for studying in these engineering colleges. This year, the counselling for the scheme was completed on 30th July 2019 by AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education).

A bench of Justices R Subhash Reddy and U U Lalit agreed to the claim and said that the prevailing circumstances of the state of Jammu and Kashmir are the reason behind this extension of the admission till 15th September 2019. The bunch said that the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) has no objection to the decision. As per the available figures, a total of 3,672 students had applied to avail the benefits of the scheme yet around 2,401 students could not take admission in the allotted institutes due to the weird situations of J&K.

This is a piece of great news for the J&K students who could not join the colleges because of the restrictions imposed due to the cancellation of the state’s special status. By agreeing to hear the plea of state government, the apex court has made a very propitious decision.
