SC Holds Admissions of College of Agricultural Technology, Theni
TNAU has approached Supreme Court challenging the order of Madras High Court. The apex court has finally imposed an interim stay on admissions.
The Supreme Court has imposed an interim stay on the order of Madras High Court which allowed College of Agricultural Technology (CAT), Theni to fill its 120 seats. The college comes under Sri Krishna Educational Trust. The trust got approval from the Government of Tamil Nadu to start the agricultural college on June 21, 2010. The government granted 60 seats to the college. The college is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).
However, TNAU had approved 60 more seats to the college on June 20, 2011, for the academic year 2011-12. The university had imposed regulations that the college had to fulfil the norms in stipulated time. TNAU had given six months time to upgrade infrastructure and other facilities.

The standing committee of TNAU visited the university in June 2016 and inspected the college. After the inspection, the committee in its report stated that the college does not meet the requirements and the strength must be reduced to 60 from 120. The academic council also approved the recommendation of standing committee.
Finally, the trust approached Madras High Court on August 5, 2016, challenging the recommendation of standing committee to reduce the intake. However, the authorities of the university did not take the final decision, and the court has issued show-case notice to the university as it did not take a decision. On the other hand, the last date for admissions was August 31, 2016.

The authorities failed to make a decision before the admission date. The court regarded it as contempt of Court Act and imposed a fine of Rs. 25 lakh on the university. The High Court has also granted provision admission to the remaining 60 students.
