On August 17, 2017, the Supreme Court of India issued an order to stall the counselling for medical courses in Tamil Nadu temporarily. With an objective to deal with the interests of state board students who qualified NEET-UG 2017, the apex court directed Medical Council of India and Tamil Nadu government to come up with a balanced solution. The Supreme Court issued an order to stall the counselling while hearing a plea filed by six students seeking NEET-based counselling. The court further clarified that the status quo existing currently with regard to medical admissions shall be maintained until the MCI and state government come up with a solution.

The apex court further directed the state government of Tamil Nadu to disclose the details of the students of the state board who have qualified in the NEET-UG 2017 examination. According to the apex court, no student should suffer due to an ordinance passed by the state government.

After constant efforts, the state government of Tamil Nadu got an exemption from NEET-UG 2017 for the current academic year following which admissions were to be done on the basis of Class 12 marks. Few students who performed well in NEET-UG 2017 examination were not happy with the policy of state government. These students are demanding to conduct the medical admissions solely on the basis of the merit list of NEET.

The state government will soon submit the result sheet of NEET 2017 examination and state board merit list to the apex court.

The petitioners further sought the court to direct the state government to grant MBBS admissions in government medical colleges, government quota seats in private medical colleges, Annamalai University and Raja Muthiah Medical and Dental College based on NEET 2017 merit.
