The School of Design of Pearl Academy, New Delhi hosted ‘Pearl Portfolio 2017’, an annual event of the institute. During the event, the graduating students of the academy highlighted their work in front of industry professionals. A total number of 275 graduating students not only exhibited their work but also took part in ‘Design Conversations’ with design professionals and industry experts from different creative industries.

Two-panel discussions also took place during the event that focused on some key topics in design education. The main objective of conducting the panel discussion was to enable young design professionals to shape their career. The first panel discussion took place on the theme ‘Expectations of Design Industries from Young Designers’. The following members took part in the first panel discussion: -

  • Naveen Varma & Karu, Creative Directors, Appster
  • Sanjib Chatterjee, Architect
  • Anju Prasad, Founder & CEO of Desmania
  • Akshat Bhatt, Principal Architect, Architecture Discipline
  • A. Balasubramaniam, Founder Director, January Design

The panel discussed industry expectations, specifically from young designers, in different aspects of business. The second panel discussed the theme ‘Indian Designs, Global Ambitions’. The members of the second panel were: -

  • Shiny Varghese, Indian Express
  • Nitin Tiwari, Editor In Chief, Creative Gaga
  • Manish Gulati, Founding Partner and Principal Architect, OFA Studios
  • Abhimanyu Nowar, Industrial Designer, Kiba Design
  • Nikhil Paul. Lighting Designer, Paul Matter

They discussed Indian designs and Indian designers, and how far these designers from India are being perceived globally. The panel also focused on distinctive characteristics of Indian designers. They further sorted out the competencies required to reach the global audience. Both the panel discussions were thought-provoking and received good response from the audience.

During the event, the institute felicitated the students who have come up with outstanding projects. One of the students, Shelly Shukla prepared a model that can play a significant role in providing a relaxing and calm environment for learning to the students who are suffering from Autism. She used four basic elements while designing the project - Fire, Air, Earth and Water. Another student, Raunaq Nandan designed a concept that is useful for adaptive re-use of water tank structure as a retail space and design museum.

Siddhi Golecha, a PG student of Communication Design came up with an innovative learning aid that will help the children suffering from dyslexia to master the art of writing and reading in ‘Devanagary’ script. Another student from the same group, Priyanka Hans developed a board game that enables introverts to move forward and face the challenges, which they do not address normally. Amol Gupta, a student from Product Design developed a tool for manure collection. The key features of this tool are adaptability and affordability. The unique feature of this product or tool is to carry heavier loads to long distances.

Prof. Nandita Abraham, CEO of Pearl Academy indicated that the design educators must work in the realm of greater possibilities. There is a need to empower the next generation design professionals with global competitive edge. It will lead to tremendous changes in the workplaces. Pearl Academy has been successful in skilling the professionals in design education for the past two decades. The institute can proudly say that the students who graduate from Pearl Academy will reach greater heights in their careers.

The Jaipur campus of Pearl Academy bagged the most beautiful campus award in India from India Today. Economic Times also awarded ‘Best Education Brand 2017’ award to Pearl Academy.
