Odisha School Students to Rate Teacher’s Performance
The Odisha government is planning to implement a system where school students will be able to rate the overall performance of the teacher. The aim is to improve the learning outcome in schools and the performance of the state teachers.
Across higher educational institutions in India, students are asked to give feedback of the teachers at the end of a semester. Soon, Odisha students may also receive the opportunity to rate the performance of their teachers.
The Odisha Government has announced a proposal to come up with a system wherein school students will rate the performance of the teacher. The step has been taken in order to enhance the learning outcomes and the performance of the state teachers. As per the proposed plan, the Odisha Government expects the students to rate the overall performance of the teacher.
Sources stated that the appraisals and increments in the salary will be dependent on the feedback provided by the student. The students will be able to rate the performance of the teacher at the end of every class. They added that the students will be asked to rate the teacher and the class conducted on a scale of 10.
As per leading news agencies, under the Odisha Government, the School and Mass Education Department has enforced the practice in some of the Government schools Odisha.

Talking to the media, Sameer Ranjan Das, the School and Mass Education Minister Odisha, stated that their objective is to collect the feedback offered by the students. The practice involves, the teacher recording all the details of the class such as the time of entry and exit, the number of students who attended the class and the topics that were touched upon in the specific class. He added that the students will also be able to send in their feedback regarding classes and teachers. He stated that the practice will help the teacher to understand the areas that need to be worked upon.

Sources stated that the Department is also working on restricting the use of mobile phones by the teacher during a class. Those found using cellphones in the class will have to face the action. The step, however positive it may look, may offend the teachers association in Odisha. However, providing the students with the ability to rate the performance of teachers will allow the student to open up about the areas that he/she finds difficult to understand.
