According to reports, the number of Ph.D. seats offered under science programmes has been increased by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). However, the number of seats under courses like social science, language, arts, literature, aesthetics, and culture studies have not been raised.
The reports have been contradicted by student organisations like JNUSU and ABVP. These students informed that the increase in the number of seats is the result of miscalculation and that there is no real change in the programme intake.
Mohit Pandey, President of JNUSU said that there has been no increase in the number of seats. The new numbers are just the corrections of the calculation errors, added Pandey. Students are still awaiting an official reply in this regard.
A massive seat cut was recently announced by the University for the M.Phill and Ph.D. programmes. Students, as well as the teachers association of JNU, have also been voicing their disagreement against the cut in the number of seats.
