<p>Modelled on the lines of Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) hilly state Uttarakhand is to get its second residential University at Almora.
This was disclosed by CM Harish Rawat while addressing a meeting of officials at Dehradun Cantonment, “The process to set up the residential university to cater to the needs of advanced higher studies begun. The upcoming residential university at Almora will be modelled on Delhi's JNU. It will be developed as per the standards and norms of University Grants Commission (UGC),” said the CM.
Chief Minister also instructed chief secretary Rakesh Sharma and other senior officials in the state higher education department to allocate Rs10 crore for the proposed University.
Sources from the government said that the new university will be built in three phases within the next year. Pandit Uday Shankar Theater Academy, which is coming up at Almora, will also become part of the university. Departments of different schools for higher studies, other institutions that will be set up in the campus include a centre for performing art and culture, school for food and craft, fine arts, a school for sports, Himalayan science, nanotechnology and life sciences.
Besides, subjects like alternate energy and other environment-related subjects will also be taught at the university.
The new university will greatly help the students to pursue their higher studies as it will be much less expensive than sending them to Delhi.
The state government would soon introduce an act to set up the university.
