Self-defence Programmes gain Popularity in DU Colleges

Colleges affiliated to the University of Delhi are motivating students to participate in self-defence lessons after the mass molestation incident at Bengaluru.

A second-year student of Kirori Mal College (KMC), Hemant Ghai informed that the college is providing 15-day self-defence course in association with the Delhi police. The programme was started by the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the college in order to enable female to protect themselves.

The programme is open to all the students and requires a registration amount as less as Rs.100. that will be utilized to provide refreshments to the trainees.

Hindu College has also introduced a similar self-defence and skill development course by the name of Project Veerangana. The institute will impart basic self-defence training for interested female candidates that will further help them to find employment.

Women of the age group of 16-25 are being trained in the New Ashok Nagar slum area. The training will be a three-tier process under which the first 10 days will comprise a workshop organized for women and children by a special police unit.

This workshop will be conducted in collaboration with Evergreen Public School. Close to 40 students of the schools and 30 women from the slum area will be participating in the workshop. Once the workshop is completed, these women will train other women of the slum under the guidance of colleges and schools.

Entrepreneurship, communication and teaching skills will also be imparted to these women to prepare them for employment and starting their own business units. The initiative has been started to make women more self-dependent.

Satyawati College’s NSS unit has also initiated a 15-day self-defence training program that will start from January 20, 2017.
