Shivaji University will soon begin its second round of Ph. D and M. Phil admissions for 2015-16. Over 200 Ph. D seats were allotted during the first round.
"The university has finished with the first round of allotting Ph. D seats for the year based on the results of the entrance test and interviews. If an aspirant withdraws at this stage, the vacant seat can be allotted to the next student in-line, as per merit, during the second round," said the official.
The number of Ph. D seats, which had declined considerably last year after a circular by the University Grants Commission (UGC), increased to over 200 after there were several vacancies in the seats under the allotted supervisors.
"A supervisor can oversee and guide a maximum of eight Ph. D candidates at a time. The seats go vacant depending on completion of the students' projects. As a result, new candidates can take their place. The pre-course work registration for admitted students is going on right now. Once that is completed, the second round will commence. The details will be released accordingly," said the official.
In July 2015, the UGC had issued a circular stating that external supervisors will not be eligible as guides. The directive had clarified that any Ph. D/ M. Phil degree awarded by a university overseen by a supervisor who is not the faculty member of the university or its affiliated PG colleges/ institutes would be a violation of UGC regulations.
