Sikkim: Foundation Stone for First Government Engineering College Laid
- Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr. Pawan Chamling laid the foundation stone for the first government engineering in the state located at Chisopani.
- The college is named as Sikkim Institute of Science and Technology (SIST).
Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr. Pawan Chamling laid the foundation stone for the first government engineering in the state located at Chisopani. During the ceremony, CM of Sikkim revealed that education is beyond politics and the government gives top priority to education. The college is named as Sikkim Institute of Science and Technology (SIST). He indicated that the government is planning to bring reforms in the education system in the state, and urged the teachers and stakeholders to equip the students for modern day competitive and demanding education system.

Mr. Pawan Chamling further pointed that establishing a new educational institute in a specific locality will open employment avenues for the youth and people in the surrounding areas. He also announced the commencement of a Girl’s College in Khamdong, an Arts College at Mangshilla and a Vocational College at Dentam. The government will also take up various programmes for the development of education in the state, he added.

Principal Secretary to HRD Ministry, Mr. G.P. Upadhyaya revealed that Sikkim Institute of Science and Technology (SIST) is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 18.2 crore. The first government technical institute in the state will be affiliated to Sikkim State University and Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan will support SIST.
Initially, SIST will offer Civil Engineering and Computer Science Engineering courses. 60 students will be enrolled in each programme. Considering the demand for Computer Science Engineering course in the region, the state government has planned to offer it.
