Innovator Sonam Wangchuk Awarded D.Litt Degree
Mr. Wangchuk, the real-life 'Phunsukh Wangdu' from '2 Idiots' has been awarded honorary D.Litt degree by Symbiosis International University for the commendable work he has done in Ladakh region of J&K state.
The Ladakh-based engineer, Sonam Wangchuk, whose life and contributions to the society inspired a character in the famous Bollywood movie “3 Idiots” has been awarded an honorary D.Litt degree by a university in Maharashtra.
To recognise his work as an educationist and innovator, he was awarded D.Litt degree by Symbiosis International University on 23rd October 2018 in Pune. The chief guest for the event was President Ram Nath Kovind.
After accepting the degree, Mr. Wangchuk said that he has not done anything great or special. He did what humanity demands people to do. He is known for establishing the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh - SECMOL.

He started SECMOL in Ladakh, which is regarded as a non-traditional school and that has brought educational reform in the region. The school helped a number of students to clear the exams to the intermediate level through innovative means. Earlier, many students were not able to clear the exam and were failing miserably. This inspired Mr. Wangchuk and he decided to do something about it. He has done a commendable job for the students belonging to remote areas of Ladakh region.

He concluded his speech by saying that he did this out of humanity and made the best use of solar energy. He created the artificial glaciers to help solve the problem of water scarcity in the remote areas of Ladakh.
