Specially Abled Girl Carves Her Path to NIFT-Delhi

Bhumika Raghav, 17, is a resident of Ghaziabad who has made it to the prestigious fashion designing college, NIFT Delhi. Bhumika has spinal muscle atrophy (SMA), a locomotive disorder, which restricts her from walking without any support. Despite the challenges she faces, Bhumika proved that will-power is the way to turn your disadvantages into advantages.

Passionate about sketching, Bhumika always dreamed to pursue her career in the same field. After being rejected by several schools for admissions to class 11 because of her disability, Bhumika decided that she prove herself and her abilities and started studying at school.

Remembering her difficult times, Bhumika said that she had studied at St Mary’s Christian School up to class 10 and all her classes were organized on the ground floor. As she moved on to class 11, her classes were conducted on the second floor and it was difficult for her to keep up with the stairs.

Bhumika’s mother informed that the school was not willing to move the class downstairs and ignored their requests. However, the school states that Bhumika’s mother willingly took her transfer certificate without any pressure on the part of the school.

Talking about her daughter Bhawna Raghav, Bhumika’s mother said that her daughter never gave up and did exceedingly well without having studied in a school and secured 70% in 12th standard with commerce stream.

Bhumika’s condition was discovered when she was 2 years old. Although there is no treatment or surgery that can help her but Bhumika and her family fought all odds.

Bhumika cracked Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination (UCEED) for Design organised by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, entrance exam of National Institute of Design (NID) in Vijayawada and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi opening the gates for some of the most prestigious design colleges for herself.

Bhumika opted to study in NIFT, Delhi as it is close to her home and has decided to stay at the girls’ hostel to become independent and self-sufficient.

Fashion communication is the course that Bhumika aspires to study at NIFT as it has minimal use of tools and suits her medical condition. She starts her college on July 29 and is excited to enter a new phase of her life.
