Ministry Seeks Report on Sports Quota Admission Discrepancy in Charuchandra College
No answer from the Academic and Administrative Council has been received on the Sports Quota Admission discrepancy at Charuchandra College of Calcutta University. Ministry has sought a detailed report.
A letter is issued to the Higher Education Ministry of West Bengal by Cheif Minister’s Department of ‘Monitoring Cell on Program Implementation in CMRO’ seeking attention on the allegations of Misconduct in the Sports Quota admissions in Charuchandra College of South Kolkata. The Committee has directed the Education Ministry to inform about their actions taken on the matter within the timespan of 7 days. According to the directives of the Ministry of Education, the University of Calcutta has sought a detailed report from the admission committee of Charuchandra College on the matter.
According to the College Source, the online portal for admissions in the academic session 2019-2020 was opened on 27th May 2019, however, there was no admission related notices in the portal, after two days, on 29th May, the portal started to take admissions. Since then, the students who were seeking admission in the college in sports quota reported that they are unable to upload their sports-related documents in the admission portal of Charuchandra College. After the strict notice served to the college admission committee by the Ministry of Higher Education, West Bengal government, the college has reportedly fixed the problem in the admission portal on 6th June.
Many sports quota aspirants of Charuchandra College expressed their grievances that they have already applied in the regular quota for the inability for uploading the documents. Thus, the problem again arose after the publication of Merit List by the college. Samir Bera, the professor of Commerce Department and the director of Sports in the College said, “According to the rules, the sports quota applicants who have the supporting documents get 5% merit points at the time of admissions, in short, the college council adds 20 marks more in total of the best four combination marks, but in the merit list published by our college, it has not been maintained.” Prof. Bera added that many Sports Quota students may miss the chance of admissions as their name has gone down in the merit list for this mishap.
After the mishap was detected, one professor sent a letter to the Ministry of Higher Education, West Bengal and the Office of the Cheif Minister. He claimed that the college has excelled in the production of a successful sportsperson as in last 10 years, many sportspeople selected in Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and other international sports events are alumni of Charuchandra College. The letter sent to the office of the Cheif Minister mentions the name of Sapna Barman who is a gold medalist in Asian Games 2018. Except that, students like Md Rafik, Pranay Haldar, Pritam Kotal has played for the Indian football team.
Still why this discrepancy in the sports quota admission? Facing the question by a reputed Bengali media house, the present teacher-in-charge, Professor Anuradha Ghosh ignored by saying “Let me answer where I am answerable to first, then I’ll talk about the matter.”
The President of the Administrative Council of Charuchandra college, Mr. Shivranjan Sarkar said, “Our college has produced many successful sports person in past. The Higher Education Ministry has directed to stop all the quota except the government directed ones.” But he has chosen to remain silent on the topic that sports quota is a government-directed one.
