Students Pursuing Science Stream at the SSC Level is More Likely to Earn Better: Study

A research team comprising of four scholars from the Michigan State University, University of Connecticut, Indian Statistical Institute (Delhi) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad have come up with a study which suggests those students who opt for science stream at the SSC level along with computer skills and English are likely to earn 18 to 25 per cent more compared to the ones who did not.

According to one such researcher Nishith Prakash, the students must be aware of all the consequences in the future of a stream or subject which they want to pursue before making a decision. Nishith Prakash is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Connecticut and Women & Public Policy Programme Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.

The study also underlines the importance of English Language skills in the job industry. According to IIM Ahmedabad’s Associate Professor of Economics Tarun Jain pointed out that Science students with a strong command over the language earns 28% higher compared to the non-science individuals. The numbers drop down to 19% for those Science students who have a fairly good command over the language and students below that have no advantage over their peers from non-science streams.

According to a survey conducted by the Indian Human Development Survey, urban men between the age limit of 25 and 65 years could be beneficial in jobs related to mathematics, engineering, science and technology if they possess good computer skills.

Michigan State University’s PhD Economics student Raghav Rakesh says that Science stream students upskill themselves unknowingly whereas Indian Statistical Institute’s Economics Professor Abhiroop Mukherji opines that good command over the English language and computer skills are also important for the Science stream passouts to have a good career.
