St Stephen’s Faculty Writes to HRD Ministry Regarding Autonomy

St. Stephen’s College has been constantly writing to University Grants Commission (UGC) and the HRD Ministry regarding the autonomy issue. Around 42 permanent teachers of St Stephen’s College ( University of Delhi) have written to them protesting against the university’s decision to apply for autonomy.

The teachers of the St. Stephen’s College are asking the commission to reconsider the application as it was a decision taken in haste without even consulting the stakeholders.The staff sent the first letter to UGC on 16 April 2018 and the second letter regarding the same was sent on 28 April by the staff association which passed a resolution against the decision.

During a meeting of the governing body, the college had decided to apply for autonomy on 25 February 2017 without considering the opinions of the teachers. As per the teachers and students, this will lead to the beginning of a self-financing course and there will be changes in service conditions. Apart from this autonomy will also lead to fee hike.

As per the teachers, St. Stephen’s College has benefited tremendously from the large pool of academic expertise in various colleges and University departments. The autonomy will lead to the separation of college from the larger parent body which will make affect the academic standards.

The faculty of the college is of the view that the decision is taken by few members to spoil and exploit the brand name of the college. However, the principal, the chairman, and governing body were unavailable to express their views on the same.
