St. Stephen’s Puts on Hold the Proposal to Seek Autonomy

St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University decided to hold the proposal to seek autonomy as students and teachers protested against the decision of the governing body of the college. It had decided to go ahead with the proposal for seeking autonomy on February 25, 2017. However, it is now planning to hold consultations with various stakeholders as per the demand of the teachers’ association.

One of the officials associated with the staff council revealed that the principal of the college informed that the management will put on hold the proposal for seeking autonomy and decided to hold consultations.

Earlier, the teachers threatened the college management that they would resort to mass resignation from the administration posts if the governing body does not withdraw the proposal to seek autonomy. On the other hand, the teachers’ association demanded that the administration of the varsity shall seek consultations from various stakeholders before going ahead with the proposal.

John Varghese, Principal of St. Stephen’s College claimed that seeking autonomy will not affect the students and teachers as the college have a lot of autonomy due to the minority status. However, the teachers and students continued the protest despite the announcement made by the principal. Therefore, the governing body has decided to withhold the proposal.

During the budget session of the parliament, Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister announced that the central government has plans to give autonomy to top performing institutes. Therefore, various colleges affiliated to Delhi University decided to seek autonomy status.
