St. Xavier's Law School Gets Approval From Bar Council of India

St.Xavier's University, Kolkata got the clearance from the Supreme Court of India and is all set to start their first session (2019-2020) of Law courses. These courses will be offered under Xavier School of Law.

After getting approval from the Bar Council of India, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata is all set to get started with its Law school. The institute has been planning to do it for a long time now and ultimately the courses are going to come into existence from the next academic session i.e 2019-2020. St. Xavier’s University is the second university in India which is run by Jesuit came into existence from the 2017-2018 session.

Candidates wanting to join the law courses which will be offered by the varsity will have to appear in the Xavier Law Admission Test. The school under which these courses will be offered has been named as Xavier Law School. The admission to these law courses will be conducted till 12th July 2019.

The University will be offering five years integrated B.A LLB (Honours) and B.Com LLB (Honours) courses to the students. XLAT i.e the entrance test for admission to these courses has been scheduled to be conducted on 14th July 2019. Students who have passed their intermediate level and are not more than 20 years of age can apply to appear in the entrance. It is to be noted that the aspirants who want to join the B.Com LLB course offered by Xavier Law School must have had Mathematics as a compulsory subject in their +2.

The type of questions to be asked in XLAT is MCQ. The question paper can be divided into the following section - Legal awareness, English, General awareness, Logical reasoning and Mathematical aptitude ( for the students opting for B.Com LLB course). The candidates with a valid CLAT score can also apply for admission within the stipulated span.

Rev. Fr. Felix Raj, Vice-chancellor of St.Xavier’s University said that opening up of a new wing in order to offer law courses is one step forward towards fulfilment of the vision 2025 programme. He also added that apart from imparting effective legal education through these courses, the students will also be taught about values of life which will result in their complete growth. Fr. Raj also said that the legal system of our country lacks values and it will be a contribution of St. Xavier’s College to the law education system of our country.

St. Xavier’s University has already worked in building the infrastructure which will be required for the institute to offer the law courses. It has built a legal aid clinic, moot court and law library. Students will also be given the opportunity to visit various courts in the state, the Supreme Court and the High Court. They can also avail the guidance of the experienced and qualified law faculty as an integral part of their curriculum. The Vice-chancellor has also asked the students to go through the official website of Xavier Law School in order to know more.
