State Universities May Face Difficulty in Implementing 10% EWS Reservation
State universities may face several challenges for implementing 10% reservation for EWS. Existing infrastructure and facilities at state universities would not be sufficient, as the varsities must increase seats as per 10% EWS quota.
State governments have been directed by Union HRD Ministry to implement 10% quota for EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) in general category. However, state universities are in a state of nervousness, as they have hardly four months for the commencement of new academic session.
As state universities must implement 10% quota for EWS from the upcoming academic session, the officials are gearing up to work towards the same. However, state universities have figured out some major issues that may act as barriers to implement the new reservation policy.
One of the officials of a state university in Karnataka pointed out that the existing infrastructure and facilities at state universities would not be sufficient, as the varsities must increase seats as per 10% EWS quota.

Challenges to be Faced by State Universities for Implementing 10% Reservation for EWS
The following are some of the major challenges that must be faced by state universities for implementing 10% reservation for EWS –
- As seats must be increased in state universities to comply with 10% reservation policy for EWS, additional infrastructure must be required. Therefore, increasing seats is not possible at state universities without robust infrastructure.
- The state universities must recruit extra teachers to maintain an adequate student-teacher ratio.
- In order to accumulate the required infrastructure and appoint extra teachers, the state universities must need a lot of time. However, they have only four months to complete the tasks.
- Implementing reservation purely on economic grounds is expected to cause several irregularities, as many students submit fake income certificates.
