The Union Power Minister, RK Singh, said on 30th September that only certification will not work for Skill Development courses. He demanded a degree or diploma for the students who complete any skill development course. While he was addressing the conference of the skill development ministers of India, he said that the country is lagging behind the developed countries in this sector.

Mahendra Nath Pandey, the minister of Skill Development department informed that this particular sector has received a much-needed boost as Mr Narendra Modi has focused a lot on skill development. He announced the Kaushalacharya Samman for the teachers to be given on 5th September 2020. He said that the skill development courses should be designed to produce job givers and not job seekers.

He informed that the first skill development centre is opened in Mumbai and more will come up in Kanpur and Ahmedabad.

Different state ministers gave their suggestions on improving the skill development courses. However, everyone agreed on the fact that the skill development courses need to be more in-line with the modern-day industry requirements. The skill development courses in one particular region must cater to the industrial needs of that area. To make the training process target-oriented, regional mapping is important.

Mr Umesh Patel, Minister of Chhattisgarh state said that the states should not be overburdened with the responsibility of setting up skill development centres. The states seek equal participating attitude from the central government of India.

Another important issue was put up by an Uttar Pradesh Minister, Mr Kapil Dev Agarwal, who informed that the banks are not willing to give loans to the people who want to start their own business after skill development courses. This is a serious matter and should be looked into.

The conference was held to stimulate the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme. Under this scheme, skilled workers are provided with training and also a stipend of Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 9,000 based on the worker’s educational qualification. The skill development sector in India is expected to take a boost from the collective initiative of the states with the union.
