According to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), India ranks first in the world with respect to the number of students getting bachelors degree in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) subjects.

Around 5 billion students received bachelor's degree in the year 2012 IN STEM subjects all over the world. Out of these, 29.2% students belonged to India. The second country in the list is China with 26% of the STEM graduates followed by EU with 9.5% and the US with 6% as per the UNCTAD's Technology and Innovation Report 2018 released on 16 May 2018.

The wide gap in the percentage of students graduating in STEM subjects in the US is the prime reason that they rely on a large number of foreigners, especially Indians to fill in the technology positions.

Many other countries, just like the USA, are facing the same problem and many employers find it difficult to fill the high-skill vacancies due to the shortage. As per the ManpowerGroup survey, 40% of employers are unable to fill the positions.

Looking at the trend, UNCTAD has urged educational institutions to consider and take necessary steps to fill in the gap because they are unable to keep pace with technological advances. They should make significant changes in their education and training systems.

According to India's University Grants Commission, 10.7 million students in India were enrolled in science, engineering, computer science or technological courses.
