Alumni of the St Stephen’s College step up to get the college’s eatery reopened. They have stated that they will boycott the alumni meet that is scheduled in October if the eatery is not reopened in the institution’s premises.

In February 2016, the eatery of the college was shut down as the owner Rohtas, 65 year old, passed away due to tuberculosis and pneumonia. After his demise, the college decided to close the dhaba that was once popular among the students for the samosa and gulabjamuns that Rohtas used to sell.

A statement was passed by the Association of Old Stephanians – an unofficial alumni group of the college that said that the college dhaba was an institution in itself. After the passing of Rohtas, a condolence meeting was organized for him and the administration was requested to reopen the dhaba. The association also said that the administration has not yet taken any action in this regard.

They also added that if the dhaba is not reopened then they will not attend the alumni meet that will be organized by the college on October 8.

Rohtas’ family had started selling food items on the campus of St. Stephen’s College in 1922. At that time, his grandfather, Sukhiya use to run the canteen. Later, Rohtas’ father and then he himself joined the family business and became popular for his eatables among the students and the teachers.

Rohtas’ son, Sushil had also started working at the dhaba from the past few years but he now remains jobless as the eatery was shut down.
