<p>Students of various colleges of Mangalore protested against the move of the Karnataka Government for supplying drinking water from Yettinahole, a tributary of river Netravati, which might damage to the environment.
Students of Govindadasa Pre-University College, volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) and members of Sanketa, Mangaluru, participated in the protest. They wanted to create an awareness about the project amongst the people.
Members of Sahyadri Sanchaya, a group of green activists, distributed handouts ‘Yettinahole Uttara Needi’ to people. The convener of sanchaya Dinesh Holla, explained the importance of the Western Ghats and the need to protect it from any damage. He said that all the streams originating at the ghats were important and measures to divert them were dangerous.
The students took out a procession and staging a street play at Surathkal recently.
Netravati is one of Karnataka’s west-flowing rivers. Originated in the Western Ghats, journeys through Dakshina Kannada before emptying into the Arabian Sea near Mangalore. While Yettinahole, one of the tributaries of the Netravati, has been in and out of the news for a while because the Karnataka Government believes it could be a source of drinking water for the parched eastern districts.
The activists would distribute handouts at Bantwal and B.C. Road Today according to a media report. The sanchaya has convened a meeting of representatives of professional associations in the city on Saturday to garner support against the project.
