Once again, the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University went on a massive strike against the reduction of seats in M.Phil & Ph.D. courses on March 22, 2017. There have been continuous protests against the new admission rules. The varsity had released the prospectus on March 22, 2017, which indicated seat cuts in M.Phil and Ph.D. courses as per the UGC gazette notification.

Last week, the High Court of Delhi dismissed the plea filed by the students who sought that the varsity had to rollback new admission rules. However, the High Court clarified that all the varsities including JNU have to follow the notification issued by University Grants Commission. The authorities of JNU had stalled the admission process and issue of prospectus until the High Court judgment.

Now, the varsity has issued the prospectus for the year 2017 as the judgment of High Court is in favour of the university.

Mohit Pandey, Student Union President, JNU pointed that the Vice-Chancellor of the varsity had promised that they would hold wider consultations and assured no seat cuts in Ph.D. and M.Phil courses. However, the varsity did not hold any consultations and issued prospectus as per new UGC guidelines. He further indicated that they would decide the future course of action regarding the issue.
