Students Quit the Pursuit of IITs to Take Admission in Institutes Near Home
- Students withdraw admissions from IITs to get colleges near their homes.
- A total of 67 seats remained vacant at IITs after the completion of fifth round of seat allotment.
- Seats were also vacant at some of the top IITs in the country.
Changing the trend of the past few years, some of the students shortlisted for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are surrendering the seats allotted to them during the counselling. According to a few experts, the reason behind vacating these seats is that students prefer to study at institutes closer to their home.
According to reports, a total of 67 seats remained vacant at IITs after the completion of the fifth round of seat allotment. Amongst the institutes where seats were vacant included IIT Bombay and Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad. These seats were allocated in the sixth round of seat allocation that was declared on Tuesday, July 19, 2017.
A Professor of IIT Bombay said that there are students who prefer taking admission in institutes that are closer to their home instead of those that offer brand value.
By the announcement of the fifth and sixth rounds of counselling results, students often withdraw admissions from the top IITs to take admission in newer IITs that are closer to their homes, the professor added. The trend was introduced in 2016 when JoSAA introduced the admission withdrawal option, the professor informed.
