Shivaji University is considering a centralised admission procedure (CAP) for undergraduate courses. D R More, director, Board of College and University Development at Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK), said on Wednesday that the university will discuss the possibility at a formal meeting with stakeholders. More had promised to look into the matter during a discussion with various students' bodies last week,

"The university, no doubt, favours the centralised admission process, but it is the colleges who grant admissions to their institutes. They need to be convinced that CAP will revolutionise the overall admission scenario in higher education,"

- Dr.D.R.More, Director, BCUD, SUK

More added that since students bodies have raised the issue, he has asked them to first convince colleges about the possibility of CAP in their institutes for first-year admissions. "We can hold a formal meeting with principals once they all agree to discuss the issue," he said.

According to More, there are about 12-13 colleges in the city so first-year admission through CAP can be managed easily. "Most colleges are for science while a modest number offer commerce and few colleges have seats for arts. I think implementing CAP here for undergraduate courses will be feasible only for the science stream. All colleges carry out their own admissions. CAP, which will be restricted to city colleges, might streamline the UG admissions system, he said.

The director also mentioned that 10 years ago when it was decided to hold CAP for Class XI, institutes were not very receptive. "However, the decision was accepted majority of the junior colleges and now one cannot imagine Class XI without the CAP," he said.?
