Supreme Court and IIT Madras sign MoU: The Supreme Court has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU ) with IIT Madras on the use of artificial intelligence and technology for improving court proceedings and developing an exclusive streaming platform for process automation,  court trials, and large languages models. The collaboration has been made under the leadership of the Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud. The agenda for signing the MoU is to facilitate the digital transformation of the Indian judiciary which will ultimately reduce the time required for case proceedings, leading to speedy trials and quicker access to justice. The focus is to build an advanced legal ecosystem with efficient use of technology.

Supreme Court, the Apex body of India in a press release stated that "The collaboration which will also focus on leveraging AI Tools in Capacity Building & Training, creating e-learning Platform and ICT skill development courses, is a significant leap forward in the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology to enhance the efficiency, accessibility, and capacity building of the legal domain."

The collaboration will allow legal professionals to have access to AI tools that will help them in making more well-informed decisions. Moreover, the backlog of pending cases has been the major issue prevailing in the country for decades, therefore, the use of artificial intelligence-driven tools will help the lawyers in managing and prioritizing cases effectively. The collaboration will also provide valuable training to lawyers, judges, and court staff ensuring they are equipped to utilize AI efficiently.

In conclusion, the MoU between SC and IIT Madras represents a significant step towards modernizing the Indian Judiciary. By using artificial intelligence and technology, the collaboration seeks to accelerate the legal processes and enhance accessibility and transparency of the legal system. While the challenges will arise like data privacy and cybersecurity, the partnership will definitely address the issues and improve the future of Justice in India.
