Supreme Court Directs Tamil Nadu Govt. to Conducted Medical Admissions based on NEET
- With the latest development, the state government has no other option except to follow the directives of Supreme Court and Union Health Ministry.
- The state government is expected to release the merit list for MBBS and BDS courses based on NEET on August 23, 2017.
The Supreme Court of India has asked the Government of India to begin the counselling of undergraduate medical & dental courses based on NEET merit list. The court further directed the TN government to complete the admission process by September 4, 2017. Justice Dipak Misra issued the direction after the Central Government informed SC that it was not in favour of the Ordinance passed by the state government seeking exemption from NEET. On August 22, 2017, the apex court was hearing a plea filed by six students seeking to conduct merit counselling based on NEET score and merit.

Earlier, Law Ministry and HRD Ministry cleared the Ordinance and granted an exemption to the state. However, the Central Government decided not to support the Ordinance as it would encourage other states to ignore the call for the common entrance exam.
Submitting his opinion to the Health Ministry of TN Government’s NEET Ordinance, Attorney General clarified that the NEET ordinance passed by the state government is not good as per law. Last week, the Union Health Ministry sought the opinion of Attorney General Mr. K K Venugopal on the Ordinance. HRD Ministry and Law Ministry by that time had already cleared the ordinance stating that it was in accordance with the provisions of Indian Constitution.

On the other hand, the Union Health Ministry was also of the opinion that if the centre clears NEET ordinance, other states like Gujarat might also demand the centre to grant relaxation for Gujarati medium students and then the rest will follow.
