Supreme Court: Final Verdict on Age Limit in NEET to be Announced on March 31
The Oversight Committee headed by former Chief Justice of Supreme Court RM Lodha recommended that the age cap could be removed for NEET.
Finally, the Supreme Court of India is going to give the final verdict on age limit in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) on March 31, 2017. Earlier, various petitions were filed in Supreme Court to roll back age criterion. The union government introduced age limit and a cap on the number of attempts in NEET examination.
The Oversight Committee headed by former Chief Justice of Supreme Court RM Lodha recommended that the age cap should be removed for NEET.

On March 16, 2017, Vice-President of Medical Council of India, Dr. Bhirmanandam called for a press meet and informed the media that the Medical Council of India will follow the recommendations made by Oversight Committee. He further indicated that the Union Health Ministry has approved the recommendations made by Oversight Committee and MCI has passed it.

A petition to roll back age criterion was also filed in Allahabad High Court. Dr. Anand Rai, an activist pointed that around 20,000 medical aspirants who are above 25 years of age are waiting for the decision of Supreme Court. The future of these candidates will depend on the final judgment given by Supreme Court. It is expected that the court may give a positive judgment and also age relaxation to such candidates.
The Oversight Committee, which recommended to roll back age criterion, felt that the provision would reduce the number of doctors in the country. Apart from age criterion, the Oversight Committee also recommended to roll back cap on a number of attempts.
