The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India had taken up the issue filed by St. Stephen's College against the University of Delhi on October 19 and the hearing was carried out in two sessions. The issue primarily revolved around the weightage given to CUET scores for admission. As per the guidelines by Delhi University, 100% weightage should be given to CUET 2022 score while the prospectus given by St. Stephen's College, a DU affiliate, states that 85% of the total weightage will be given to CUET scores and the rest 15% weightage will be given to personal interviews of the candidates.

After hearing both sides of the argument, SC stated that it can’t give a stay on the order passed by the Delhi High Court. The admissions will happen based on CUET merit completely i.e., 100% of weightage will be given to CUET scores and no interview process will be held. The admission must be carried out as per the guidelines of Delhi University. The revised prospectus as per the SC decision will soon be published by the college on its official website. The SC also noted that the next year's admission process will be discussed in March 2023.

The same matter was taken to the Delhi High Court earlier and on its 12th September 2022’s judgement required St. Stephen's College to revoke its admission prospectus and adhere to the guidelines laid out by Delhi University.

What Happened in St. Stephen's College DU Admission 2022 Hearing?

  • The bench first confirmed if an interview for UG admissions is allowed under the University Grants Commission policies or not, to which the UGC advocate argued that the commission is not in favour of conducting the interview.
  • UGC advocate further added that the introduction of CUET was done to maintain uniformity in the admission process and out of the 6 minority colleges affiliated with DU, only St. Stephen's College is conducting interviews for non-minority students for admission, which breaks the uniformity in the admission process for minority and non-minority students as well as for the overall DU admissions.
  • The SC bench also noted that a weightage of 15% for interviews is huge.
  • The advocate representing DU argued that there are hidden parameters in St. Stephen's College and only merit-based i.e. 100% CUET weightage is the best option for admission. Due to the unstated criteria of the interview, a meritorious candidate may not get admission to his/her desired course.
  • The Supreme Court ruled out that the admission process should be uniform for all colleges and thus, it will not put a stay on the judgement of the Delhi High Court. The court told St. Stephen's College to revise its admission policies as per the guidelines of Delhi University.
