Supreme Court to Resume Hearing on Age Criteria for NEET-UG 2017

Earlier, a fresh plea was filed in Supreme Court and the petitioners claimed that NEET 2 was tougher compared the previous ones.

The Supreme Court will resume the hearing of the plea filed against the age criterion in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET-UG 2017. Earlier, a fresh plea was filed in Supreme Court and the petitioners claimed that NEET-II was tougher compared to the previous ones. On the other hand, the Central Board of Secondary Education announced the common result without ‘rationalization’ or ‘normalization’ of the score obtained by the candidates in the two examinations.

Earlier, Supreme Court directed the union government to reply on the plea. On the other hand, while the hearing of a plea that was filed in Allahabad High Court, the bench ordered the Medical Council of India and Central Board of Secondary Education to provide responses in context to the age criterion.

Union Health Ministry, which indicated that the minimum age to take NEET-UG 2017 examination is 17 years, implemented the age criterion and upper age limit is 25 years. The decision taken by the health ministry received a negative response from most of the medical aspirants. One of the students expressed that the government restricted NEET-UG to three attempts and there is no point of imposing a age restriction.

Therefore, few students filed a petition in the Supreme Court and Allahabad High Court seeking justice.

Recently, the government of Andhra Pradesh requested the Union Health Ministry to reduce the NEET cut-off score for MBBS/ BDS courses so that more students get a chance to be eligible for medical and dental courses. The ministry gave a positive response, however the final decision is yet to be taken.
