The Supreme Court of India refused to hear the plea filed by Islamic Students Organisation of India regarding the inclusion of Urdu in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET. As per the official notification issued by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), NEET-UG 2017 examination will be conducted in ten languages.

Mohammad Ali Sheikh, Senior Member of Islamic Students Organisation of India stated that the government’s plan to exclude Urdu from NEET-UG 2017 is unjust. He claimed that there are many Urdu-speaking students in the schools of Maharashtra region and including the language in NEET-UG 2017 will help these students to crack the examination. He expressed his concern over the fact that the apex court had rejected the plea.

The Supreme Court also heard the petition regarding the age criterion in NEET-UG 2017 examination. The petitioner claimed that the government should rollback the age criterion as thousands of students become ineligible for the examination. On the other hand, there is a cap on the number of attempts and the government must rollback age criterion as it restricted NEET to three attempts.

Even since the notification of NEET-UG 2017 was declared, there have been various issues in context to it. The Tamil Nadu government urged the Centre to exclude it from NEET for the current academic session as it claimed that the students are not yet ready to take NEET examination as the syllabus is mostly CBSE-centric whereas the syllabus followed in Tamil Nadu is state-centric, i.e., prescribed by the state government.
