Suspended JNU Students Refute Charges, Stage Protest against Decision

The administration of JNU had suspended 8 students over the charges of disrupting the Academic Council Meeting that was supposed to be held on December 26, 2016. However, the students stated that the charges were baseless and protested against the move.

Protests were staged in front of the admin department. The university stated that the students have misbehaved on campus. JNU suspended 15 students for being physically violent and threatening the staff as well as VC.

However, the students contradicted that the charges were fake. They further added that the protest was staged against the adoption of UGC's gazette notification according to which interviews /viva will be the only admission criteria. The students were also opposing the 25% fee hike.

The students added that they are being targeted and are facing discrimination from the marginalized communities. A reply has also been sent to the authorities regarding the suspension.

The administration of the university agreed that they have received a joint reply regarding the notices that were served to the eight suspended students for disrupting Academic Council meeting. The authorities also informed that the students have refused the charge against them.

Dawa Sherpa, Mulayam Singh, Rahul Sonpimple, Shakeel, Dilip Yadav, Bhupali Kusum Vitthal, Mritunjaya, and Prashant are the names of the students who were suspended by the university administration.

Also, Joint Secretary of JNUSU, Tabrez Hasan was fined Rs.5,000 on charges of disturbing the class routine. Student political wing, NSUI has extended its support to the suspended students and JNUSU and marched to the HRD ministry on December 28, 2016, asking them to revoke the suspension of the students.
